Activated carbon has been used in conjunction with conventional water treatment processes to improve the esthetic quality (taste, odor, color) and to reduce the probability ofpotentially toxic compounds reaching the consumer.

PAC addition is often the removal of unpleasant tastes and odors or, in some cases, toxins produced by blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). In Europe and the United States, PAC is also used to help control high levels of pesticides or other man-made industrial micropollutants in the source water.

Granular activated carbon is used extensively for the removal ofmicropollutants such as pesticides, industrial chemicals, and tastes and odors. It is also sometimes used to remove natural organic material (NOM), such as humic and fulvic acids, which is present in all water bodies, and reacts with chlorine in the disinfection process to form potentially harmful disinfection by-products.

The major factors influencing adsorption onto activated carbon during waterpurification are:-

1. Activated carbon surface structure (pore sizes and shapes) and surface chemistry

2. Adsorbate shape, size, charge, solubility, hydrophobicity, and aromaticity

3. Water quality, pH, and ionic strength.
